Don’t miss the chance to hear from esteemed Emeritus Professor Michael Atherton AM, renowned Australian musician, composer, academic and author. Come and hear inspiring stories and insights about his work, life and creative passion.
Of Welsh, Irish, and north-German heritage, Michael migrated to Sydney in 1965, at the age of fifteen, living in a migrant hostel for a couple of years. Since then, he has built a diverse career, spanning rock and roll, pioneering music therapy, performing traditional and classical music, composition, and university teaching and research.
From a self-taught guitar player to an accomplished composer and multi-instrumentalist, Michael continues to explore the materials and processes of sound-making. Proficient in over thirty instruments, ranging from the ancient Welsh crwth to contemporary electronic sound-making devices, anything placed in his hands becomes a musical instrument.
Michael has toured extensively worldwide with Sirocco, and Southern Crossings, supported by Music Viva Australia. His impressive body of work includes numerous CD recordings, documentary film scores and television themes.
